This is a very common problem on alot of older receivers and mini system and see alot of them throw away because of this. You need to desolder the volume control off the board and bend the metal tabs back just a liitle not to much or you will break them. Clean the inside with contact cleaner, you can buy at radio shack, because not to bend the leads to much, then need to relube the volume control with silicone grease and install.
